The Grand Parade of the Utterly Unnecessary (and Entirely Essential)

The Grand Parade of the Utterly Unnecessary (and Entirely Essential)

If you’ve ever thought, “I really shouldn’t… but oh, why not?” then you’ve already been invited to the parade.

The Grand Parade of the Utterly Unnecessary isn’t about waste — it’s about choosing joy even when no one’s watching. It’s about giving yourself permission to be whimsical, decadent, and a little bit absurd simply because you can.

How to March in This Parade (No Baton Twirling Required):

  1. Upgrade the Ordinary.
If you’re making breakfast, put it on your fanciest plate. If you’re taking a shower, use the soap that smells like a magical forest picnic.

  2. Play with Scent and Sound.
Light a candle that makes your space smell like the inside of a delicious secret. Put on music you can’t help but dance to (bonus points if it’s wildly inappropriate for the task at hand).

  3. Wear the Ridiculous.
That velvet robe? The glittery earrings? The hat shaped like a cupcake? This is their moment.

  4. Make Mundane Magical.
Folding laundry while pretending you’re in a montage from a romantic comedy. Watering plants with dramatic flair. You get the idea.

  5. Stock Your Arsenal of Delight.
I keep shelves filled with fragrant, beautiful, and utterly over-the-top bath and body treats for precisely this reason. Because when delight is within arm’s reach, you tend to reach for it more often.

Life is a series of Tuesdays disguised as Mondays — unless you choose otherwise. This week, let’s choose the parade.
